Gyotaku ('gyo' meaning fish and 'taku' meaning rubbing or impression)
Gyotaku dates back to the 17 century and was believed to have been originated by Japanese fishermen. It is a simple yet complicated art form created by carefully pressing rice paper onto a fish. Snookemon uses a variety of mediums including acrylics or hand ground sumi ink to first paint the specimen, then by carefully pressing rice paper or muslim over the fish, an impression is transferred to the medium.
Snookemon uses his experience as an avid fisherman and artist when creating his artwork. This love and passion for the water is reflected in the true life-life impression of his prints. His variety of presentation techniques ranging from spatially hanging lucite to resin coated outdoor hangings or traditionally mounted framed or stretched canvas assure a unique addition to any design schema.
